For the support of tank operations in offense, and to keep effectively captured positions, Soviet Army utilized special assault troops during Great Patriotic War. Due to the absence of the armored personnel carriers in Red Army, soldiers were transferred to the combat on top of the tanks and AFV’s. In order to reach the maximum fire rate during assault campaigns, motorized infantry were supplied with automatic weapon, like PPSh-41, PPS-43.
